Celebrating the arrival of a new year with friends and family can be a joyous occasion filled with traditions and many times alcohol. Unfortunately, New Years is also one of the most deadly holidays. Many people will make the poor decision to drive while intoxicated, putting themselves and others in significant danger. Many people will consume too much alcohol, putting themselves at risk of serious injury or assault. For many people the arrival of the New Year will be punctuated with displays of fireworks which can lead to serious injury or death if not used properly. The misuse of fireworks is even more likely to happen when alcohol is involved.

Common New Years Injuries:

- Injuries sustained in drunk driving collisions

- Alcohol poisoning

- Pedestrian injuries from drunk drivers

- Accidents caused from being overly intoxicated such as falling down the stairs

- Burns from firework accidents

Tips for staying safe on New Years:

- If you plan on driving, do not consume alcohol or any other intoxicating substance.

- If you do plan on ringing in the new year with your favorite alcoholic beverages, make plans to get home safely. Planning ahead for your ride home ensures you will not make the dangerous decision to get in a car after drinking.

- Be aware of your surroundings as a pedestrian. Unfortunately many people will make the decision to drive after drinking. Stay alert when walking on foot, especially downtown and near bars and restaurants.

- Monitor your alcohol consumption

- Keep a fire extinguisher close by if you plan on shooting off fireworks and follow local rules and ordinances regarding the time and place for their use.
